What does this indicator measure?

Obesity is defined as having an unhealthy body mass index (BMI) or a body weight greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height. Adults 18 and older with BMIs of 30.0 or greater are considered obese.

Why is this indicator important?

Being obese increases the risk for certain diseases and other health problems. In 2008, obesity-related U.S. health care costs were estimated at $147 billion (Finkelstein, Health Affairs).
