What does this indicator measure?

The average travel time to work is calculated as the average of minutes for all workers who drive, walk, take public transit or other means to their place of work (which is by definition outside of their homes).

Why is this indicator important?

Lengthy commutes decrease worker free time and can contribute to health problems. For example, there is a 6% increase in likelihood of obesity for each hour spent driving (Frank, Am J Prev Med, 2004).
