What does this indicator measure?
The percent of live births where it was reported on the birth certificate that the mother had ever initiated breastfeeding.
Why is this indicator important?
One of the most effective preventive measures a mother can take to protect the health of her infant and herself is to breastfeed. Human milk is the only substance that provides complete nutrition and immunologic protection to the human infant. Infant health outcomes from receiving human milk correlate with immediate and lifelong effects on children's lives. Added outcomes of human lactation are the physical and psychological benefits for the breastfeeding woman.
