What does this indicator measure?
Premature death is represented by the years of potential life lost (YPLL) before age 75. Every death occurring before the age of 75 contributes to the total number of YPLL. For example, a person dying at age 50 contributes 25 years of life lost to a county’s YPLL.
Why is this indicator important?
An important measure that focuses attention on deaths that probably could have been prevented. Examining the causes of premature deaths can help target resources and strategies that will extend life span.
