What does this indicator measure?
This measure represents the number of injury-related emergency department encounters among Indiana residents per 10,000 people and is age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. population. It includes primary diagnoses with ICD-9-CM codes of: 800–909.2, 909.4, 909.9–994.9, 995.5–995.59, 995.80–995.85 or external-cause-of-injury codes: E800–E869, E880–E929, E950–E999 (State and Territorial Injury Prevention Directors Association definition).
Why is this indicator important?
More than 2.8 million people are hospitalized and 29 million people are treated in emergency departments as a result of violence and injuries each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
