What does this indicator measure?

This measure represents the percent of the population that is covered by comprehensive smoke-free workplace laws. A comprehensive law prohibits smoking in all workplaces including all hospitality venues and indoor public places.

Why is this indicator important?

Comprehensive smoke-free air laws protect workers (and patrons) from exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke can trigger numerous negative health effects, like asthma and heart attacks, and contains more than 60 chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer.
