What does this indicator measure?

This measure represents the percent of live births where the newborn weighted less than 2,500 grams (or less than, approximately, 5 lbs, 8 oz).

Why is this indicator important?

Compared to infants of normal weight, low birth weight infants may be more at risk for many health problems. Infants born preterm or who were exposed to cigarette smoke as a fetus are at greater risk for having a low birth weight.
