What does this indicator measure?
This measure represents the percent of live births that occurred prior to 37 weeks gestation (i.e., premature).
Why is this indicator important?
One of every 8 infants born in the United States is preterm. It is the most frequent cause of infant death, the leading cause of long-term neurological disabilities in children, and costs the U.S. health care system more than $26 billion each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
